Excellent, musst-read crossover story!
Format: Paperback
Jason Aaron is hands-down one of my favorite comic book writers. The characters in his Star Wars books in particular 'sound' exactly like they do on screen, which is a tough thing to pull off for such a well-loved universe. This series is extremely well put together with beautiful art and coloring. I simply couldn't be happier with the direction that Marvel is taking. The blend of 'familiar', while keeping things unique and fresh is really well done. I also love how Aaron enhances little details from the movies that I never really stopped to think about before, providing satisfying glimpses into the stories we know and love that fit beautifully into canon. This graphic novel in particular tells a fantastic story about Darth Vader's relentless pursuit to figure out who it was that destroyed the Death Star. Seeing the growth of Luke as a character in these early days is also fascinating. Definitely a must-read addition to the Star Wars canon!

Action Packed Crossover
Format: Kindle
Vader Down collects the crossover issues between Marvel's Star Wars and Darth Vader ongoing series. Luke Skywalker has gone to Vrogas Vas to find a former Jedi temple to learn more about the Jedi Order. Through the connections of Doctor Aphra, Vader has discovered his location and moves to intercept. Along with Vader is Aphra and her murderous droids, Triple Zero and BeeTee. Luke isn't without assistance as Leia, Han Solo, Chewie and C3PO head to Vrogas Vas along with a Rebellion army in order to take down Vader once and for all. The book paints a picture that shows how dangerous Vader can actually be -- he individually goes up against an entire squadron of rebellion X-Wings with a single tie fighter. It also sets up some entertaining face-offs such as droid versus droid (C3PO and Triple Zero; R2 and Beetee), wookie versus wookie (Chewie and the bounty hunter, Black Krssantan), rogue versus rogue (Han Solo and Doctor Aphra), and Jedi vs Sith (Luke and Vader). The book also sets the final showdown between Vader and Commander Karbin, one of the various protoge's of Doctor Cylo who were aiming to replace Vader as Palpatine's apprentice. Overall, the book is a decent read despite being a bit predictable. The showdowns between various opposing characters are entertaining and the book advances the storyline of both series. It does require a bit of an open-mind because it's supposed to be part of the canon of the Star Wars universe, but as with a previous confrontation between Luke and Vader, it comes off as a bit odd given their interactions in The Empire Strikes Back. The artwork varies a bit between Salvador Larocca and Mike Deodato. Both produce high quality work, but each chapter alternates between the two which can be a bit awkward to get used to.

Vader may be Down, but he is far, far from out.
Format: Paperback
I have been consistently pleased with the Darth Vader and Star Wars comic series, and the Vader Down crossover kicks it up to 11. It is easy, watching the movies, to forget how powerful Vader truly is. Anakin Skywalker was a prophesied Jedi Hero, or phenomenal raw talent. In only a few years he outclassed Jedi Knights who had been training two or three times as long as he had, but in the Original Trilogy, we have very few glimpses of that power. Not so in Vader Down. I won't spoil it, but let's just say Darth Vader has an impressive kill count. Within the lightsaber duels, fire fights, and interstellar dog fights, Vader Down (And the rest of the Darth Vader series) still finds time to build, if not sympathy, at least understanding for Darth Vader as a character. He is still a villain, but you find yourself rooting for his success more often than not. Overall, a phenomenal read. I cannot recommend it enough.

Surprisingly Great Story!
Format: Kindle
This TPB takes place right after the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Darth Vader comes out of hyperspace in his lone TIE Interceptor nose to nose with 2 squadrons of Rebel X Wings. Excellent action sequences ensue. This is my first acquaintance with the Star Wars Universe in Marvel comics (apart from the 80's books) and if Vader Down is an accurate representation of the quality of work, it's comparable to the fantastic job Marvel did on Stephen King's Dark Tower prequels. This was also my first digital purchase of any comic for my Kindle. While having a hard copy of the comic would be a lot preferable, the $3.99 purchase price was a bargain to own the story.
